Action Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminants
ACHEMMIC is a newly formed group consisting of physicians, scientists, researchers, indoor air quality experts, industrial hygienists, building engineers, advocates and others who are working together to promote the truth in health policy about the adverse effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants.
A request for action letter was submitted today to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, GAO Acting Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, and Senior Advisor to the Senate Majority HELP Committee Michael Meyers. ACHEMMIC is urging the EPA to adhere to GAO recommendations meant to provide consistent, accurate health advisories within the policies of all Federal agencies of the adverse health effects of mold and other microbial contaminants.
The GAO audit of the public health threat was requested by the late Senator Edward M Kennedy. In October of 2006, he requested that the Federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) perform an audit of the current scientific understanding of the health effects of mold.
The result of the two year audit was a report issued in September of 2008 titled "Indoor Mold: Better Coordination of Research on Health Effects and More Consistent Guidance Would Improve Federal Efforts". The GAO deemed that the Federal Interagency Committee on Indoor Air Quality (CIAQ) would be the perfect organization to oversee this endeavor was carried out to ensure consistent government messaging in the name of public health. The CIAQ is governed by the EPA.
ACHEMMIC encourages the EPA, CIAQ, and other Federal agencies to work together to fulfill the late Senator's lifetime dream of preventing and treating illness of all US citizens.
Copies of the letter are being sent to individuals and organizations around the country, including numerous elected officials, government agencies, media outlets, medical organizations and others. The letter is also being posted on numerous websites and blogs.

The Atlanta-based CDC has reassigned its chief researcher into chronic fatigue syndrome, a longtime target of scientific organizations and patient advocacy groups around the country.
Researchers in Nevada last fall reported a strong correlation between chronic fatigue syndrome and XMRV, a retrovirus related to the one that causes AIDS. The potential breakthrough has excited the 1 million or so Americans with CFS who are looking for treatment.
The CDC's research program, led by Dr. William C. Reeves, had no role in that study, and Reeves was dismissive of its findings. Critics said that was because the agency had wasted $100 million on looking for a possible psychological explanation for CFS and dismissing outside research that looked for a viral cause.

On Feb. 3rd, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency's CIAQ (Committee on Indoor Air Quality) held one of its three yearly meetings in Washington, DC. Prior to this meeting, the US GAO Mold Audit Workgroup was to have met again, in Jan. 2010, to determine how to protect health by informing the American public about mold hazards, prevention and solutions, maintaining consistency across federal agencies (one of their very few meetings scheduled since designated to do so by the GAO in its Oct. 2008 report).Their progress was to have been reported in the CIAQ meeting, as CIAQ oversees this workgroup. But it was a no-show for the mold workgroup. In fact, nothing about mold problems was even on the agenda! We'd like to know WHY. Whose decision was that? We want that information made public, with a detailed explanation. There are signs that under the new Obama-appointed EPA administrator, Lisa Jackson, indoor air pollution is not a top priority.
The CIAQ has the responsibility, given to it by the US General Accounting Office, research arm of Congress, to coordinate the mold information in a manner that will benefit the public. We insist that this be continued and the task completed. It has been 1.5 years since the US GAO Mold Audit was published. The stalling and avoidance must stop.
